It would seem we need a human rights movement in the U.S. now. Solitary confinement for 22 years!! The true irony is that when the black community was galvanized to make things better, there were few if any black studies or African Studies, or Africana Studies Programs. Now that we have those programs, and there is more historical information available, people seem to be less politically inclined. However, the author of "The New Jim Crow" has rightfully centered her arguments in a human rights framework. Youth in jail are young people in jail, no matter their color. Mexican and other Hispanics, and blacks, make up the majority of the prison population and many are under 21 years of age. This creates a poison that then seeps into black communities. Where does this fit into other struggles for human rights in the world today?? This is something worth thinking about. It is necessary to have well-thought out approaches to such problems, as those who support human rights and resistance to mass incarceration are patriots and must never be misconstrued as otherwise.
